The foundation of The Murlidhar Ratanlal Group was laid in the year 1964, when Late
Murlidhar Kajaria and Late Ratanlal Kajaria (the father and the son) planted a
small sapling, MURLIDHAR RATANLAL, a Partnership Firm, which in course of time emerged as
a promising Export House for Jute products. Mr. Bijay Kumar Kajaria (B.K.),
who represents the third generation of the family, involved himself in the family business
immediately after completion of his education and brought in new dimension in the
management of the firm. The momentum it received since B.K. Kajarias induction, got
further acceleration after induction of Ajay Kumar (A.K.)
and Sanjay Kumar Kajaria (S.K.), (the second and third sons
of Late Ratanlal Kajaria) in the affairs of this Partnership House.

In 1981, the Kajaria Brothers entered the arena of manufacturing
activities with their imaginative outlook. In the same year, they launched a Private
Limited Company in the name and style of Murlidhar Ratanlal Exports (Pvt) Ltd. which
specialised in manufacturing activities on stitching of all types of Jute bags including
Speciality Bags.
But that was only the beginning for the ambitious Kajarias. Despite
their creating a wide network in international market with their proven abilities, they
had to remain abjectly dependent on others for supply of the materials. To have perfect
backward integration to ensure in-time supply of goods, strict adherance to Quality
parameters and firm grip on overall management of export services, they were dreaming of
acquiring a full-fleged Jute Mill soonest possible. This was transformed into reality on
their acquiring the Hastings Jute Mill (now a division of the Limited Firm) at Rishra in
the year 1994. This Private Limited Company was transformed into a
Public Limited Company in 1995 for better management and greater
stability. Thus from a mere Trading House in mid-sixties the Kajarias came up as an
industrial semi-giant in the nineties.
In the meantime, the Kajarias diversified their activities both in jute
front and in other areas. On the one hand, they took over The Ganges Rope Co. Ltd
at Shibpur, Howrah and on the other, they installed a new 100% Export
Oriented Jute Yarn Plant in the name & style of Kajaria Yarns & Twines Ltd.
To diversify the activities on the line of changed market demand, the
Kajarias installed Dyeing & Bleaching Plants with modern effluent system in the Hastings
Jute Mill. Specialised cell has been established to promote diversified
jute & jute blended products. New sophisticated machineries are
added to its Yarn Plant to meet the challenging demand for finer count yarns.
From an annual turnover of mere Rs 2.5 Million in the sixties,
the Group turnover has now exceeded Rs 1100 Million equivalent
to ( USD 31 million).
